image

image
image
is an old word (13c) derived from Latin imago meaning ‘copy, likeness, picture’ and in all its meanings suggests a real or mental picture. Since the late 1950s it has been used by marketeers, advertisers, and political spin doctors to mean ‘a concept or impression created in the minds of the public about a particular person, product, institution, etc.’:

• The first task of the public relations man, on taking over a business client, is to ‘re-engineer’ his image to include something besides the production of goods —J. K. Galbraith, 1958

• In contrast to the image of police work as exciting and dangerous…, patrolling was invariably boring and somewhat aimless —I. Marsh, 1992

• Mounted police charges and mass arrests kept the demonstrators out of the embassy, but the image of the building was darkened for good —Guardian, 2002.
